How to save & clean dress after your big day?
By 21 Bridal 2012-02-13

The wedding day is over, and there lies your beautiful dresses that spent your much money on. Rather than placing it on a hanger and shoving it in the back of the closet to yellow, opt for cleaning your gown and displaying it in a nice box. After all, someday your daughter might ask you if she can wear it for her big day.

About Cleaning
The best possible way to thoroughly clean a wedding dress before storing it is to take the dress to a high-quality, professional cleaner that specializes   in wedding attire and evening gowns. However, if the gown is still very clean with only a few small stains, there are ways a person can treat or spot-clean the dress at home.

1. Determine which fabric the wedding dress is made of. If the garment is silk, lace or a vintage gown, it's better to have it cleaned by a professional.

2. Inspect the dress thoroughly to locate any stains, including stains from perspirations, foods, liquids and makeup. If the wedding dress is full-length, the hem will most likely have collected dirt.

3. Use a white, dry, absorbent cloth to gentle bolt the satin after applying an appropriate cleaning fluid, as described in the next step. Before applying any liquid or cleaning agent to a stain, test it on a less visible section of fabric to avoid discoloring the dress.

4. Apply hydrogen for wine, sweat and blood stains. Hydrogen peroxide can bleach fabrics, however, so don't let it sit on the fabric for too long if the dress is any color other than white. For ink stains, apply a light spray of hairspray. For oily stains such as makeup or food, apply a dry cleaning solvent or a mixture of soap and water.

5. After blotting up as much of the stain as possible, apply a few drops of white vinegar and blot again. Next, flush the area of fabric with water, blot again and then allow the area to dry.

6. To clean a dirty hem, soak the hemline for a few hours in warm water mixed with detergent, being careful to keep the rest of the dress out of the water. With a toothbrush, gently rub the hemline with the sudsy water to loosen all dirt. Flush thoroughly with water.

7. Don't hang a wedding dress on a hanger to dry after spot cleaning it. Wet fabric is heavy, and the dress could stretch or rip. Instead, place the dress over a clean drying rack. The rack should be plastic coated or vinyl coated, as splinters from a wooden one could tear the dress or rust from a metal one could stain the dress.

About Preserving
If you take as much care in preserving your dress as you did in choosing it, it can be enjoyed as a family heirloom for generations to come.

1. Save the bag your dress came in, or bring along a plastic bag to protect the dress en route to the cleaner.

2. Select a professional dry cleaner, preferably one that specializes in formal gowns. Ask for recommendations from friends and your bridal shop or seamstress.

3. Get the dress to the cleaner as soon as possible after your wedding.

4. Alert the cleaner to any stains - a drop of bubbly, a smudge of lipstick from that first kiss - as well as to any ornaments that were glued rather than sewn on (these pieces are prone to fall off during the cleaning process) and to loose stitches. This information will ensure that your cleaner can give your dress the best care possible.

5. Ask your cleaner for a special acid-free box to store your dress in, and pack it in acid-free tissue paper. You can also hang the dress by the bodice by sewing straps that are a bit shorter than the bodice onto the waist, placing on a padded hanger and wrapping in a clean white cotton sheet.

6. Store the dress in a temperate, dry place, out of direct sunlight.

7. Inspect your dress on each anniversary to check for any discolored areas or missed stains and to allow your dress to "breathe."

How to clean a wedding gown and prom dresses?
By 21 Bridal 2012-11-22

if your bridal gown fabric and lining are polyester, you should easily be able to clean your own wedding dress by hand-washing it. Wet cleaning will often clean your gown better than dry-cleaning because dry-cleaning solvents do not remove water based substances including perspiration and most food spills.

1
1Perform a thorough inspection of your dress. Look over the dress for any stains. What does the stain consist of? Make sure you have the cleaning supplies you will need. Take a good look at the hemline. Unless you lifted your skirt, and carried your train everywhere you went on your wedding day, your train will be dirty. Wedding dress trains are like great, big, dry mops that clean the floors of churches and reception centers!

2
Keep the body of the dress out of the water while following this step. Soak the dirty hem in a clean bathtub using warm, sudsy water for a couple of hours if possible. Next, working your way around the dress, use a toothbrush and the liquid detergent to "massage" the hemline clean. Be careful not to scrub too vigorously on lace or trims. Be sure to clean the underside of the hem as well. Check the dress lining/s for dirt as well. Clean the hem of all layers very well. Rinse the hem thoroughly when you are completed.

3
Turn the dress bodice inside out and spray the lining of the bodice area (the part that fits on your upper body) with the soap and water solution. Use the toothbrush and the detergent to clean perspiration stains. Next clean the skirt lining. If your dress has many layers of lining in the skirt, be sure to look over all of them and clean all the stains you find.

4
Look over the outside of the dress very carefully and spot clean any stains you might find. Spray the spot with a sudsy spray solution first. Use the toothbrush if necessary but be very gentle. Just "massage" the fabric. Add the liquid detergent straight if needed Be particularly careful of laces and trims.

5
If soap and water do not remove the stains, mix up a solution of Oxy Clean® and place the stained area in the solution to soak until the stain disappears. Do not use chlorine bleach, such as Clorox, as it leaves a film that is very difficult to remove.

6
When you are satisfied with the cleaning of your dress, fill the bathtub with warm water and place the whole dress carefully in the tub. Swish the dress around in the water as soaps from the cleaning process are rinsed out. Let the water drain and then fill the tub again and repeat the process. Follow this procedure several times until the water is very clear without any soap bubbles. We recommend three rinses at least. It is critical to get all soap and cleaning solutions rinsed out of the dress.

7
Dry. The dress should be "line" dried, but not by hanging it on a hanger. The weight of the wet dress could damage the dress. One way to line dry it safely is by placing a fold-up drying rack (vinyl coated) in the bathtub, and hanging the dress over it. Do not place the dress on bare wood. Place the dress so the weight is equally distributed over the rack. Another way to do this would be to place a clean towel over a shower enclosure, and then place the dress over the towel. If you do this, be sure to place some towels on the floor underneath the dripping dress to protect the floor.

8
After the dress has dried for several hours and the bulk of the water has dripped away, it may be possible to hang the dress to finish drying it. Carefully spread any layers of tulle in the skirt or lining and smooth out all wrinkles in the dress as much as possible. This will make the pressing process easier.

9
Press it. You may choose to have a dry-cleaner steam your dress, or you may press it yourself. If you press it yourself, we recommend that you first wash and dry your ironing board cover to remove any dirt, starch, or sizing. Spread a clean sheet on the floor of your working area to protect the dress as you press it. It is best if you use a clean press cloth of white cotton sheeting or muslin unless you are using a brand new or freshly cleaned iron. It is a rare iron that is clean enough to press a wedding dress without risk.
Where possible, press the dress from the inside. If you have a thick, cushy, ironing board cover the sequins and beads can press into it. Be sure your iron's heat is set at the proper temperature. Start at a low temperature, and increase it gradually. If it starts to stick, reduce the heat immediately.
Start at the back and bottom of the train until you feel comfortable with the pressing.
Take your time and use caution. When it is finished you are ready to preserve your gown.
